Ustad Ali Akbar Khan- Passing On The Tradition

Ustad Ali Akbar Khan- Passing on the Tradition [Live]

The son of influential Hindustani musician Allaudin Khan, Ali Akbar Khan was one of the Eastern world's greatest musicians. A master of the sarod, a 25-stringed, lute-like, Indian instrument, Khan brought the Northern Indian classical music to the international stage. A five-time Grammy nominee, Khan was called, by Yehudi Menuhin, "an absolute genius, the greatest musician in the world." Tracing his ancestral roots to Mian Tansen, a 16th century musician in the court of Emperor Akbar, Khan began studying music at the age of three. Initially studying vocal music with his father, he studied drums with his uncle, Fakir Aftabuddin. Although he tried playing a wide variety of instruments, he felt most comfortable on the sarod. Training and practicing 18 hours a day, he slowly mastered the instrument. In 1936, he made his public debut during a concert in Allahabad. In the early '40s, Khan became a court musician for the Maharaja of Judhpur. He soon acquired the title "Ustad" (master musician).

In 1955, Khan accepted an invitation from Menuhin to perform in the United States. In addition to performing at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, he recorded the first Western album of Indian classical music and became the first Indian music on an American television when he appeared on Alistair Cooke's Omnibus. In 1971, Khan performed with his brother-in-law, Ravi Shankar, during George Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh at Madison Square Garden. Khan received numerous awards including the President of India Award in 1963, the Padma Vibhusan in 1988, the Bill Graham Lifetime Achievement award in 1993, and the Asian Paints Shiromani Hall of Fame Award in 1997. He received the Kalidas Sanman from the Madya Pradesh Academy of Music And Fine Arts and became the first Indian musician to be awarded a MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant" in 1991. Khan received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts in 1997.

In 1956, Khan founded the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music in Calcutta. Teaching in the United States since 1965, he opened the Ali Akbar College of Music in Berkeley, CA, two years later. (In 1968, the school moved to a new site in San Rafael.) Khan taught six classes a week for nine months a year. In the early '90s, the school opened branches in Fremont, CA, and Basel, Switzerland. The lengthy list of films featuring Khan's music includes Chetan Anand's Aandhiyan, Satyajit Ray's Devi, and Bernardo Bertolucci's Little Buddha. He received a Best Musician of the Year award for his soundtrack for the film Khudita Pashan. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

Salokyam by Jayashri

Salokyam - Sublime music by Jayashri

Bombay Jayashri has the uncanny ability to produce a tranquilizing effect on the listeners. Her album titled Salokyam (Hindustani classical) is delightful for the sheer calm it brings to the minds of listeners. She has picked some nice songs. The album comprises compositions of Mirabai, Jayadeva and a few others. Salokyam is a Sanskrit word. It means the realm of God (Vishnu).

Jayashri has brought her prowess in Hindustani music in this album. Percussion artistes Mithilesh Kumar Jha and Sai Shravanam have accompanied her on Tabala. In this album, she sings "Jagadeesha Sudheesha" in Hamir Kalyani. It is the right kind of an invocation song with good lyrics "Jagadeesha Sudeesha Bhavesha Vibho," lavishing it with her melodious voice. One is tempted to rewind the CD to hear it once more. A composition of Jayadeva's Astapadi "Ehi Murare" in Rag Natbhairav is rendered with fineness. SeniorHindustani vocalist Lakshmi Shankar is adept at presenting such compositions. This is a Gopika Biraha geetham. They shout to Lord Krishna, when HE is not found anywhere. Jayashri renders this with involvement. She nourishes the kriti with her creative presentation. "Raamam Ghanashyaamam" in Rag Bhagyashree is pleasant and warms the heart as well as the mind. Bhagyashree, especially, is a soothing raga. Many a classical film song was sung in this raga. Mirabai's "Gopala Gobinda" in rag Shaam Kalyan is exquisite, with riveting lyrics. Jayashri embellishes this one adequately, giving it an absolute classical touch. Indeed, she takes one down memory lane to Mirabai times with her touching presentation. "Kaatyaaayani Mahaa Bhaage" in raga Durga is full of melody and is pleasing to listen. Kulashekara Perumal's ( Mukuntha Mala) "Ksheerasaagara Taranga" is tuned in raga Sindhu Bhairavi and sings it ever so gently. And, she signs off the album with Kabir's "Rehna Nahi" in rag Shubapantuvarali.

2. Ehi Muraare - Nat Bhairav

3. Raamam Ghanashyaamam – Bageshree

Ritu: Grishma-Varsha

Ritu: Grishma-Varsha(2007)

details about this album from the inlay card is given below:

Indian classical music is closely linked with nature. It is generally believed in musical circles that Raagas evoke the feelings of the season with which they are associated, and are usually sung and played in concert to celebrate the onset of the same. It is believed that only in this period the Raag appears to be at the peak of its melodic beauty and majestic splendor. Each season calls for a different kind of celebration. Some of the Indian classical raags traditionally associated with the seasons of monsoon, spring and autumn are Basant Bahar, Malhar and Gorakh Kalyan.

Raga and Ritu [Seasons] Association:-

Raga- Ritu
Bhairav- Shishir
Hindol- Vasant
Deepak- Grishma
Megh- Varsha
Malkans- Sharad
Shree- Hemant

Ritu: Grishma-Varsha
Feel the seasons of summer and monsoon come to life in all their magnificence, with Raag Sarang and Raag Miyan Malhar. Raga Sarang and Raga Miyan Malhar have traditionally been associated with the heat of summer and monsoon showers respectively.
